Gear Coupling Torque Calculator
Calculate the required design torque for a gear coupling from motor power and speed. Nominal torque T (Nm) = 9550 × P (kW) ÷ N (RPM); design torque = nominal × service factor (about 1.0 for uniform loads such as fans and pumps, 1.5 for conveyors and mixers, 2.0–2.5 for crushers, mills and reciprocating drives). Select a gear coupling rated above the design torque — SMI full gear couplings cover 500 to 500,000 Nm.
How to size a gear coupling
- Find nominal torque from motor kW and RPM.
- Multiply by the service factor for your load type.
- Choose a coupling rated above the resulting design torque.
- Confirm bore, RPM limit and misalignment with SMI engineers.
